  25. Description:
  26. FaxMail for Windows will add a <Fax> button to all your Windows Programs,
  27. giving you access to all the Fax /Modems and Fax/Machines in the world,
  28. making them become your printers.  FaxMail attaching itself to and
  29. becomes a part of the actual Microsoft Windows environment, whereby it
  30. appends itself to all system menus thereby adding its features to all
  31. Windows Applications.  FaxMail has hundreds of useful features such as
  32. Dynamic View/Edit Cover Page, FaxBook Import, Windows Dynami c All Class
  33. Fax/Modem Driver, and Technical Support.  You can import up to 1000 name
  34. and phone numbers into each FaxBook (Phone Book) at a time from any xBase
  35. data base program, and you can have as many FaxBooks as you want.

  108. BEFORE ALL ELSE:
  109. Because of size constraints we are forced to leave some of the glitter
  110. out of this shareware versions, but it is still VERY MUCH a FULL working
  111. fax program with feature not seen anywhere else.  We left off things like
  112. decorative bitmaps, several of the sample cover page logo files, faxbook
  113. imports and a few other things that will not impede your use of FaxMail.
  114. All of the above mentioned and more will be in your registered version.

  116. We are working full time on improving and upgrading FaxMail for Windows.
  117. So...before you install, look at the date on the files inside of the
  118. ZIPed file.  If the date is more than a week old, you may want to call
  119. and get the latest version.  We release minor versions about once a week

  147. There have been reports from people that FaxMail for Windows will not
  148. run at top performance when they have Norton Desktop on their computer.
  149.  
  150. LEGAL INFORMATION:
  151. If you have a registered version of FaxMail for Windows you may *NOT*
  152. share the registered version with others.
  153.  
  154. FaxMail for Windows is shareware.  This means you have a chance to
  155. test the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself
  156. to buying it.  You have a one month legal trial.  After one month you
  157. must pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use.
  158.  
  159. Only the unregistered version of FaxMail for Windows may be distributed
  160. freely, and no fee may be charged for it except a nominal copying fee.
  161. All trademarks contained herein are registered to their respective

  164. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  165. While converting printer output to a fax, FaxMail will need to create
  166. and use a temporary file called "TOFAX" and then delete it when finished.
  167. This file will be it the root of the drive FaxMail is installed on.
  168.  
  169. FaxMail will not be able to <CONVERT TO FAX> if any of the following are
  170. present on the drive that you installed FaxMail on:
  171.  
  172.  *If you have the maximum allowed files in that root directory.
  173.  *If you have a directory by the same name as the temporary file that is
  174.   off the root.
  175.  *If the drive is full.
  176.  
  177. NOTE: The reason for a small file name in the root directory is that not
  178. all programs with printing capabilities support paths.
  179.  
  180. If you are currently using another Modem-Program, remember that they can
  181. not run concurrently.  To disable it may be as easy as not loading it or
  182. you may have to remove one or more lines from your AUTOEXEC.BAT,
  183. CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI.  Typing rem ahead of a line in your
  184. AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will disable it.  Example:
  185.

  191. To disable a line in an .INI (WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI) place a ; before
  192. the line to be commented.  Example:

  199. If your old Fax-Program loads from the Windows-StartUp-Group as you enter
  200. Windows, you will have to move it's ICON out of your Windows-StartUp-Group
  201. by grabbing it and dropping it in another Group.
  202.  
  203. If you load the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver the worst that can be expected
  204. to happen is that the Fax/Modem-Driver might not load or the program might
  205. hang or fail to operate, and perhaps your modem might be left in Fax mode
  206. and require manual resetting(turn it off and back on).  Since information
  207. about models that don't work with this program will aid in correcting
  208. unsuspected problems, we would appreciate any information you can give

  218. FAX/MODEM INSTALLATION:
  219. (IMPORTANT: Read but don't do this unless you are installing or
  220. reinstalling a Fax/Modem)
  221.  
  222. Definitions:
  223. COM, Communications-Port (1 - 4).
  224. IRQ, Interrupt-ReQuest (0 - 15).
  225. External Fax/Modem, is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  226. Internal Fax/Modem, *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  227.  
  228. A majority of the people I give tech-support to have a hardware conflict
  229. due to improper Internal Fax/Modem installation!
  230.  
  231. NOTE: An External Fax/Modem is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  232.  
  233. NOTE: An Internal Fax/Modem *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  234.  
  235. If you are having problems with a Modem, Read the above line until
  236. you comprehend and understand them.
  237.  
  238. External Fax/Modem:
  239. Plug one end of the COM cable into your Fax/Modem and the other end into a
  240. vacant COM-Port.  You will have to know what COM-Port and what IRQ you
  241. plugged into so you can let the software know during software installation.
  242.  
  243. Internal Fax/Modem:
  244. When installing an Internal Fax/Modem, be sure you disable the COM-Port
  245. (located on your IO-Board) you are going to replace.  Then; before
  246. installing the Internal Fax/Modem, test, with the opening screen of
  247. COMTEST.COM (comes with FaxMail for Windows and *MUST* be run from DOS.
  248. It will *NOT* work while in Windows.), to be sure the COM-Port
  249. really is disabled, and then, AND ONLY THEN, are you ready to install the
  250. "Internal Fax/Modem".  Not doing this properly is the overwhelming major
  251. reason for Modem and other computer problems that maybe to the average
  252. person seem to have no relationship to their Modem, but it does!  If you
  253. are installing on COM2-IRQ3, the COMTEST.COM opening screen should look
  254. like this BEFORE you install the Fax/Modem.
  255.  
  256. COM1-IRQ4: UART (16450 Chip) or Equivalent detected.
  257. COM2-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  258. COM3-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  259. COM4-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  260.  
  261. Then you are ready to set the jumpers on your Internal Fax/Modem to
  262. COM2-IRQ3 and insert it into a vacant slot; thus replacing COM2.
  263.  
  264. You can use DEBUG.EXE to help install Modems, but it is not as actuate as
  265. COMTEST.COM (see Note 5).
  266.  
  267. If you are reinstalling a Fax/Modem on a different COM-IRQ, keep in mind
  268. that you may have to reinstall or run setup on all the software that is
  269. presently using the Fax/Modem.
  270.  
  271. If COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3 are in use, I would suggest one of the
  272. following configurations:
  273.  COM3-IRQ5,
  274.  COM3-IRQ7,
  275.     or
  276.  COM3-IRQ2
  277. If we would have found COM2 unused we would have configured like this:

  292. FaxMail for Windows will supports COM1 through COM4 on IRQ0 through IRQ15.
  293. But...Before these addresses can be used, your "COM-Port/Fax/Modem" must
  294. first support the configuration and second you must properly configure said
  295. device.

  297. Never skip a COM-Port as the system will go into "conflict-convulsion"
  298. from time to time.  To find a vacant IRQ, run something like SYSONFO.EXE,
  299. etc.  Here is some information on IRQs in the IBM-Compatible.  They are:
  300. IRQ0 - IRQ15.  N/A means not normally available for your Fax/Modem.
  301.  
  302. IRQ0  {INT 08h, Reserved for 8253 Channel 0 System-Timer-Tick, N/A
  303. IRQ1  {INT 09h, Reserved for Key-Board Attention, N/A
  304. IRQ2  {INT 0Ah, Reserved for Future use, (you can use if not in use)
  305. IRQ3  {INT 0Bh, Reserved for COM2-IRQ3, or COM4-IRQ3 *If not used by COM2
  306. IRQ4  {INT 0Ch, Reserved for COM1-IRQ4, or COM3-IRQ4 *If not used by COM1
  307. IRQ5  {INT 0Dh, Reserved for XT-HardDrive, Can used unless you have an XT :)

  336. As you can see, if IRQ4 is used by COM1, you have to find another IRQ for
  337. COM3.  If you have a COM1-IRQ4 and you use COM3 you will need to use an
  338. alternative IRQ.  The same goes if you are going to use COM4 and you have
  339. a COM2-IRQ3.

  341. Note 2:
  342. It is best to use COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 for Fax/Modems, as they were
  343. originally and specifically set aside for communications.  Experience
  344. has shown me that some Fax/Modems do not preform as well on COM3 and COM4
  345. using IRQ5, IRQ7 or IRQ2.

  347. Note 3:
  348. By the way, the problem with this and most system tests, such as
  349. MSD.EXE, is that they tell you what is suppose to be or what is normally
  350. on an IRQ.  For instances, when I ran this test, as you can see, it says
  351. that "LPT1" is on IRQ7.  The fact is I have a Rockwell class 1,2
  352. Fax/Modem on COM3-IRQ7.  When I ran COMTEST.COM I got the following
  353. results:

  388. If your computer has a built-in COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3, you can disable
  389. either COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 and then set your Fax/Modem to that
  390. COM-Port and IRQ.  This is done be getting out your manuals and moving
  391. the jumpers or contact the company you bought your computer and Fax/Modem
  392. from.

  394. Note 5:
  395. At Segment 0040, Offset 0000 DOS keeps a table of ports starting with
  396. your COM-Ports.  The BIOS and DOS assume that you know that you can not
  397. skip a COM-port or reuse an IRQ.  If you do, it will raise havoc with
  398. your system.  If you skip a COM-Port, your system will compress the
  399. COM-Port table thus making it useless to any program that depend on it.
  400. For instance, if you have a UART on:

  426. It looks like you have a COM1, COM2 and COM3 :-)
  427.  
  428. RESOLVING CONFLICTS:
  429.            Example of a conflict and how to resolve it
  430.  
  431. Lets assume you have a mouse on COM1-IRQ4 and a modem on COM4-IRQ3.
  432.  
  433. You have a hardware conflict.  You should never skip a COM-Port as the
  434. system will go into "conflict-convulsion".
  435.  
  436. Your computer has a COM-Port table at Segment 0040h, Offset 0000h.  It
  437. assumes you did not skip a port and if you did, it compresses it down to
  438. where, in this case, your COM4 is entered into the place COM2 should be.
  439. When you go into Windows, Windows looks at the COM-Port table and thinks
  440. you have a COM1 and COM2.  When it goes to access COM2, bad things
  441. happen, because it is not there.
  442.  
  443. FaxModem Wizard, included in COMTEST.COM, will tell you what, if
  444. anything, is on each of your four COM-Ports and which IRQ is connected
  445. to each COM-Port, COM?-IRQ?.  It will give you a written report about
  446. your Modem.
  447.  
  448.  Exit Windows and Run COMTEST.COM.  In this case it will look like this:

  485. If you are going to be using FaxMail for Windows in Windows only, you
  486. might try the "FaxMail for Windows Dynamic All Class Fax/Modem-Driver"
  487. first.

  489. DOS and Windows:
  490. If, while installing FaxMail for Windows you find that your Fax/Modem is not
  491. listed, it is possible that one of the selections will work.  For instance,
  492. DoveFax Class 1 and Practical Peripherals Class 1 works with many other
  493. class 1 Fax/Modems.  The {"Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"} will work with
  494. nearly all of the Fax/Modems derived from the "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator
  495. Kit".  Generic Class 2, Zoom Class 2, ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2
  496. Fax/Modem-Drivers are all Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers.  There are a lot of
  497. "Class 2" variations, so, if your "Class 2" board does not work with one,
  498. it may work with another.  The
  499.   "Universal, Hayes, Rockwell, Class 1",
  500.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 1",  and the
  501.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"
  502. Fax/Modem-Drivers are designed to do the job if all else fails.  It should
  503. not always be the first choice because even though it is more versatile, it
  504. may not perform as well as the one recommended by us.  Depending on your
  505. computer, another Fax/Modem-Driver may work better than our recommended one
  506. though.  Sometimes, depending on your computer, COM-Port (FIFO(16550) or
  507. not), the
  508.   "Universal, Hayes, Rockwell, Class 1",
  509.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 1",

  512. may outperform the recommended Fax/Modem-Driver.  By The Way, these 2

  515. If your Fax/Modem is not listed, look for an alternate Fax/Modem-Driver.
  516. An Internal Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an External Fax/Modem,
  517. and an External Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an Internal
  518. Fax/Modem.  The name is not important.  For instance, the AT&T class 1
  519. will work on many other class 1 Fax/Modems.  Choosing the wrong
  520. Fax/Modem-Driver will not harm Anything.

  522. The files in this package are modified to your specifications during
  523. installation and *WILL NOT* work properly if simply copied into your
  524. working directory.  You *MUST* use the INSTALL.EXE or configuration

  605. After installation, you will have several icons in the FaxMail for Windows
  606. Group and one in your StartUp Group.  Please note these icons; "Read Me"
  607. (README.TXT), "Q and A" (Q_A.TXT), "FaxMail Tutor" (TUTOR31.WRI), and
  608. "FaxMail Help".  These should be read before using FaxMail for Windows.
  609. There is also "Contact-Sensitive Help" buttons, throughout FaxMail for
  610. Windows, for your convenience,.

  612. Everything is explained thoroughly in the FaxMail for Windows help system,
  613. which may be called upon from anywhere in FaxMail for Windows.

  615. If you want to use FaxMail for Windows from within any Windows Application
  616. and/or take advantage of *ALL* the power FaxMail for Windows has, load the
  617. "Control" program that you will find in the FaxMail for Windows Group before
  618. loading any other Windows Applications.

  620. After the Control program is loaded, click on the System button (the small
  621. square button at the top left corner of all windows) and choose SetUp and
  622. configure things *YOUR WAY*.  I suggest that if you are not sure of
  623. something, leave the defaults set as it came to you.  Make a printout of the
  624. defaults in case you change something you do not understand yet.

  626.  Note:
  627.   If the Fax/Modem-Driver does not load at when you turn on your computer
  628.   it could be because FaxMail for Windows installs its Fax/Modem-Driver
  629.   at the top of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and other drivers can cancel
  630.   it out.  If this happens to you, move the Fax/Modem-Driver command:

  632.   to a spot just before the Windows load command.
  633.  
  634. HELPFUL HINTS:
  635.                         "Silent Answer"
  636. Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote sending
  637. Fax/Modem/Machine with your receiving Fax/Modem.  If the sending
  638. Fax/Modem/Machine does not support "Silent Answer" by sending the "CNG"
  639. tone, you will lose that Fax!  Please read *all* of this area before using
  640. "Silent Answer".  If you still want "Silent Answer", here is what it does
  641. and how to implement it.
  642.  
  643. Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes;
  644. receiving FAXes with the Fax/Modem, and receiving voice calls with
  645. an answering machine or telephone.  When set to this mode, the
  646. Fax/Modem lets your answering machine answer all incoming calls.
  647. If it detects Fax "CNG" tones, it routes the call to FaxMail for
  648. Windows.  Otherwise, it just sits silently on the phone line while
  649. you or your answering machine takes the call.
  650.  
  651. When the phone rings and after the second ring the Fax/Modem will
  652. start monitoring the telephone line.  If it detects a Fax tone, it
  653. will receive the Fax.  If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do
  654. nothing.
  655.  
  656. Silent Answer hardware installation
  657. When installing the Fax/Modem, DO NOT plug the answering machine into
  658. the telephone jack on the back of the Fax/Modem.  Instead, do one of
  659. the following:
  660.  
  661. a. Plug the answering machine and Fax/Modem into different wall jack
  662.    (i.e. jacks in different rooms).
  663.  
  664. b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the Fax/Modem into
  665.    the answering machine.
  666.  
  667.  
  668. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching;
  669.    use this method. You must locate the two devices on separate
  670.    extensions to make silent answer work correctly.  This means you
  671.    can not plug the answering machine into the Fax/Modem or vise
  672.    versa.  You can split a single extension with a duplex jack
  673.    adapter.  Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number 279-357
  674.    for $4.49.
  675.  
  676. Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT
  677. automatically turn itself off when it detects that a person or the
  678. Fax/Modem has answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from
  679. Radio Shack, part#43-107.  This adapter disconnects the answering
  680. machine from the phone line when the call is answered.  It goes
  681. between the answering machine and the wall jack.
  682.  
  683. Note:
  684. The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer
  685. after, and not before, the second ring.  This means you should
  686. set it to 3 for best results.  If no other device picks up the
  687. line by the time the number of rings that FaxMail for Windows
  688. is set to is reached, FaxMail for Windows will answer it and
  689. process a Fax.
  690.  
  691. To activate Silent Answer
  692. Load the FaxMail for Windows 'Control' program and click on the
  693. <System> Button, <Setup> Button and on the Silent Answer <Check>
  694. Button.  Set the number of rings until we answer to four and set
  695. your answering-machine to three rings.  If the Silent Answer
  696. <Check> Button is inactive and gray, your Fax/Modem does not
  697. support Silent Answer.

  700.            How to enable auto-load (registered version only)
  701.  
  702. When you boot-up, you have a choice as to whether you want to load the
  703. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver or not.  If you plan to always load the
  704. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, you can place y or Y behind the
  705. Fax/Modem-Driver.  Here are two examples:

  722. purpose of allowing you to control the Fax/Modem mode.

  754. "Telemate" and when you exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable"
